Pluto's Mountains, Ice, and Mists as Seen by the New Horizons Probe

The New Horizons interplanetary spacecraft was launched by NASA in 2006 to study Pluto and its moon Charon. The mission involved flying by these objects and collecting scientific data about them. This was the first time a spacecraft had flown by the Pluto system, providing unique insights into the farthest planet and its moon.

The main objectives of the New Horizons mission were as follows:

  1. To study Pluto’s surface and atmosphere.

  2. To investigate Pluto’s geological history and evolution.

  3. To determine the composition and surface structure of Charon.

  4. To study the magnetic field and charged particles associated with Pluto and Charon.

  5. To obtain high-resolution images of these objects.

The New Horizons mission was extremely successful and yielded a wealth of new knowledge about Pluto and Charon. In particular, evidence was found of ice on Pluto’s surface, as well as evidence of past geological activity. In addition, the spacecraft captured the first detailed images of Charon, which revealed that its surface consists primarily of water ice.
