Kyphosis in Sharks

Like other vertebrates, sharks need a skeleton to support, strengthen, and protect their body parts and internal organs. A shark’s skeleton consists entirely of numerous cartilaginous elements, almost all of which are connected into a single structure by joints, ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissues.

Some sharks, as shown in the video, have skeletal deformities. These can include lateral curvature of the spine (scoliosis), curvature of the hump (kyphosis), axial curvature of the spine (lordosis), missing fins, extra fins, a deformed snout, and much more. These anomalies have been observed in only a few sharks, but it has been determined that the causes of these deformities are linked to nutritional imbalances, genetic factors, parasites, injuries, or stress.

Currently, most physical injuries are caused by human interactions due to constant interference in coastal areas, where most sharks live.
